A lip-tie is a condition where the skin of the upper lip is attached to the gums in a way that prevents lip movement and makes breastfeeding difficult for your baby. Learn more about how lip ties are diagnosed and what your options are for fixing one if your baby is affected.

SIGNS OF lip-TIE INCLUDE:

  • Your baby's ability (or inability) to latch
  • If your baby makes a clicking sound during breastfeeding
  • Spitting milk out or choking on milk
  • Feeding with high frequency, called cluster feeding
  • Poor weight gain

HOW DOES A LIP-TIE IMPACT BREASTFEEDING:

  • Pain when your baby is feeding
  • Damage to your nipples
  • Distortion to the shape of your nipples
  • Development of engorgement, blocked ducts, or mastitis
  • Issues with your milk supply, either too much or too little

TREATMENT OF LIP-TIE:

Treatment is very similar to that of a tongue-tie release. The frenum attachment gets released using a dental laser. Minimal to no bleeding is expected. We encourage to feed your baby immediately following the procedure. Most of the time local anesthetic is not needed, and a successful result can be achieved without putting your baby under general anesthesia.
